Do Your Kids or Teens Have Risk Factors for Heart Disease?
Less than 3% of children in the U.S. have high blood pressure, but even so, high blood pressure is a serious condition of
childhood. It is important to ask to have your child's blood pressure checked during yearly physicals.
Did you know that heart disease is NOT a major cause of death for kids and teens but that there are risk factors that if controlled
during childhood or when they are teens can help to reduce their lifetime risk for heart disease? Most of the risk factors that our kids and
teens have for heart disease can be controlled such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity and physical inactivity. There are
risk factors though that cannot be controlled for heart disease and they include family history, and congenital heart disease. High blood
pressure, and high cholesterol can be detected and treated. Obesity can be modified through diet and exercise and physical inactivity is a
lifestyle that can be improved upon with desire, motivation and persistence. It is important to know the difference between those risk factors
that can be changed, modified or improved upon and those that cannot.

Obesity in children and teens is another risk factor for heart disease that can be controlled.
Girls have a high potential of gaining weight around ages 9 through 12 as their bodies are going through puberty.

When your blood pressure is high it can tighten the small arteries called arterioles. The arterioles regulate the blood flow throughout the
body and when they constrict the heart has to work harder in order to pump blood where it is needed in the body. As the arterioles constrict,
pressure builds up within the vessels, which can lead to heart disease. Sometimes other diseases in childhood can lead to high blood pressure
like congenital heart disease, or kidney disease. When high blood pressure is the result of another disease it is called secondary
hypertension.
Obesity in children and teens is another risk factor for heart disease that can be controlled.
Girls have a high potential of gaining weight around ages 9 through 12 as their bodies are going through puberty. Girls who are overweight are
also likely to be unhealthy with high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels. Women age 21 to 23 who are obese report being overweight when
they were as young as 9. Studies show a connection between being overweight and being at risk for heart disease. Those wishing to lower their
risk for heart disease can do so by controlling their weight.
To reduce your risk for heart disease children and teens can first recognize if they have any risk factors for heart disease, figure out which
factors are controllable and then do all they can to change, modify or eliminate the risks. One way to reduce the risks of heart disease is to
improve dietary habits to include more fresh fruits and vegetables and reduce your consumption of red meat. Another way to reduce your risk for
heart disease is to make sure that you exercise for 30 minutes to 1 hour each day.
