Heart Disease Management in the Elderly
The elderly are prone to isolated systolic hypertension, which is common among the elderly. They will require periodic
blood pressure checks to monitor for high blood pressure.
Individual鈥檚 age 65 and older that suffers from heart disease is commonly expected because age is a risk factor for heart disease. As
individual ages the heart takes on physiological changes even when no disease is present. The muscle of the heart relaxes in old age less
completely between beats and this makes the ventricles stiffer and they work less efficiently. The heart ceases to pump as vigorously as it did
in youth. The heart becomes less responsive to adrenaline and therefore does not increase the strength or rate of contractions during exercise as
it did during youth. Therefore the elderly athlete may experience shortness of breath or feelings of fatigue and even chest pain while
exercising. In the healthy elderly person this decline in heart function may not occur as soon as it may in the heart of a person who has
coronary artery disease or a valve disorder before old age set in. The arteries change too with advanced age. The elderly who have heart disease
may see changes in their quality of life due to the symptoms of heart disease. They are unable to accomplish daily tasks due to shortness of
breath, fatigue, chest pain or fainting.

Your doctor can also suggest appropriate exercise programs that will fit your desires, lifestyle and budget. Exercising doesn抰 have to involve expensive equipment or time at a gym. You can exercise in the comfort of your home by taking walks, swimming in a local pool or your own backyard pool, or by playing catch with your child or a neighborhood child. You can choose to take the stairs instead of the elevator, and to park the farthest parking spot away from the front entrance.
Disease Of The Heart

The elderly are prone to isolated systolic hypertension, which is common among the elderly. They will require periodic blood pressure checks
to monitor for high blood pressure. If high blood pressure is found diet, exercise and the cessation of smoking as well as weight management are
usually adjustments that still work to control high blood pressure just as they do in those who are young. If other disease is present it may be
necessary to treat with antihypertensive drug therapy in addition to the lifestyle changes. Males usually have higher rates of heart disease
during the middle ages but the women experience a sharp increase in the occurrence of heart disease following menopause.
Heart failure and rhythm changes are more common in this age group. When the elderly have heart attacks they are less likely to suffer from
the classic chest pain symptoms but rather have the "silent heart attacks". They may instead experience heartburn, fainting, confusion and in
rare cases no symptoms at all. The elderly are more likely to endure angina rather than to undergo surgery.
A common valvular problem experienced by the elderly is aortic valve disease. This heart disease effects nearly 1/3 of all elderly
individuals.
